Online Therapy for Body Image

Online Therapy for Body Image in Ontario by Registered Psychotherapists | Psychotherapy Collective

For many of us, the relationship we have with our body is complicated. It is heavily influenced by conditioned belief systems and narrow social attitudes around normality, value, worthiness, and beauty. Adverse life experiences such as trauma, discrimination, and abuse can also impact our ability to feel comfortable within our body.

Body image issues impact how we think of ourselves. This is often experienced as critical self talk related to our appearance, our behaviours and habits, or our sense of worth. These issues can also impact our emotional experiences, like carrying a deep sense of shame or living in constant fear of other’s opinions. The combination of critical self dialogue and our challenging emotional reactions can contribute to unhelpful behaviours such as unsustainable dieting or avoidance of activities and social engagements previously enjoyed.

With the support of a therapist, you can change the relationship you have with your body and your sense of self. It is often helpful to start by recognizing, and resisting, the destructive normative standards impacting you. In doing so, you can develop authentic notions of weight, health, worth, and beauty that are grounded in love and respect for your body. By embracing diversity in size, function, and appearance, and learning to appreciate your unique strengths and abilities, you can develop a relationship with your body grounded in acceptance.

As a therapist, I have the privilege of witnessing transformation as I sit alongside individuals, couples and families as they work to heal old wounds while creating new patterns. Even in the darkest of moments I have watched countless people make meaning of their lives, narrate their suffering and overcome severe loss and trauma with a sense of empowerment. My approach is integrative, pulling from various therapeutic modalities in my work with clients. I work with individuals (15+), couples and families.
