Online Therapy for Intimacy & Sexuality

Online Therapy for Intimacy & Sexuality in Ontario by Registered Psychotherapists

When we hear the word intimacy, many of us think of sex. But intimacy can be thought of as an all-encompassing term that can be used to describe more than sex. Intimacy refers to our connections or sense of closeness with others. Intimate connections, whether emotional or sexual, are cultivated through safety, trust, and transparency. Sexuality refers to how we experience and express our sexual selves; the identities we embody, our expression of these identities, and our attraction to others.

Our experiences of intimacy and sexuality are often influenced by a variety of contextual factors, such as cultural and religious narratives, social norms, family dynamics, and past relationships. These experiences can also be further complicated by trauma, discrimination, and oppression which may result in stress, anxiety, and shame. While these areas and dynamics can be complex, understanding can be crucial in developing deepened awareness of our experiences.

Areas related to intimacy, sex, and sexuality that are commonly brought to therapy include fear of vulnerability with others, lack of connection within relationships, discrepancies in sexual desire between partners, anxiety/shame around sexual performance and/or appearance, increasing sexual pleasure, and desire to explore sexuality. This may include sexual identities, desires, fantasies, and consensual non-monogamy.

Through individual or relational sessions, therapy can be a space to explore your experiences of intimacy, sex, and sexuality. In the process, you may gain a better understanding of the barriers impacting your comfort in connecting with others or explore your experiences and expression of sexuality. As you understand these barriers and further explore your sexuality, you can create space for increased connection, acceptance, pleasure, and sexual satisfaction.

As a therapist, I have the privilege of witnessing transformation as I sit alongside individuals, couples and families as they work to heal old wounds while creating new patterns. Even in the darkest of moments I have watched countless people make meaning of their lives, narrate their suffering and overcome severe loss and trauma with a sense of empowerment. My approach is integrative, pulling from various therapeutic modalities in my work with clients. I work with individuals (15+), couples and families.
